3 from me
Hello - and Happy Monday,
1.
This is a wellbeing triangle of needs I devised based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Schools tend to aim for cakes in the staff room, exotic soap in the bathrooms, duvet days and confectionary treats as their wellbeing strategy.
How do these things help staff to manage the emotional, social, economic and physical challenges of their role?
The real truth is they probably don’t. However, they are valuable for showing appreciation, gratitude and value.
We need staff to be well loved, not just well fed.
2.
We just need to understand - and be really clear about - why we do these things and what’s our intended impact?
We need wellbeing strategies that are rooted in the routines and rituals of the school.
Eg. With wellbeing in mind, how do we plan for learning at our school?
How do we commit to reducing workload?
How do we organise CPD?
How do we rota wider responsibilities?
How do we communicate in a way that is timely, considerate and fair?
How do we support staff by removing the barriers above as best we can?
3.
Remember, wellbeing is not a magic bullet, it isn’t always easy, and it always takes effort.

Until next time.
